A nylon sling is an incredibly versatile tool. This humble, lightweight loop will prove to be a highly useful piece of equipment. Capable of taking on great weight, a nylon sling can provide a massive benefit to your rigging operation. Nylon slings can be utilized in a few different configurations, and each will have their own application and purpose. Here we will discuss a few different set-ups to show just how versatile a nylon sling can be.
Common Nylon Sling Set-Ups
A light duty sling is a simple piece of equipment that can go a long way. A one-ply nylon sling in a vertical hitch can still handle 2,400 lbs and 1,900 lbs in a choker hitch. Some models of four-ply nylon slings are rated all the way up to 75,600 lbs in a basket hitch. The lightweight nature and pliability of these slings provides an attractive alternative to heavier wire rope in certain applications.
Additionally, a multi-leg bridle can make movements more seamless. Sometimes surface area will be more important to your rig than sheer load capacity. For those situations, a load balancer nylon sling will get the job done.
If you are concerned about friction, there are several styles of nylon sling that will help put you at ease. For example, an eye and eye (twist or flat) along with a reverse eye will be helpful in this sort of situation.
In the case of extreme heat – either through friction or reflection – a triangle choker offers the proper support and heat resistance. You will also be able to easily inspect it without disconnecting, saving you time on the job site.
