Sheave and Rope Diameter: Preventing Bending Fatigue

To understand the D/d ratio, you only need to look at two measurements: the diameter of the sheave or drum (D) and the diameter of the wire rope (d). When these two numbers are out of balance, the rope undergoes a process called bending fatigue.

 

Imagine bending a thick piece of plastic back and forth until it turns white and eventually snaps. A similar process happens to steel wires. As a rope travels over a sheave, the wires on the outer side of the curve must stretch, while the wires on the inner side must compress.

 

If the sheave (the “D”) is too small relative to the rope (the “d”), this stretching and compressing becomes so violent that the steel reaches its “fatigue limit” almost immediately.

 

A healthy D/d ratio ensures that the movement of the individual wires remains within their elastic range. Furthermore, a larger sheave increases the “tread pressure” distribution, meaning the rope isn’t being pinched or crushed into the groove.
