The Four Main Types of Stockless Anchors

The Backbone of Commercial Shipping Operations

A “stockless” anchor eliminates the crossbar (stock) found on traditional Admiralty anchors. This design allows the shank to be pulled fully into the ship’s hawse pipe, leaving only the flukes exposed against the hull. While they may have lower holding power per pound than stocked versions, their ability to free-fall rapidly and stow compactly makes them the universal standard for commercial shipping and barges.

 

1. The Hall Anchor (The Commercial Standard)

The Hall anchor is the most widely used stockless anchor in the world due to its simple, rugged construction.

  • Design: Features a cast steel crown and forged steel shank. The shank is secured by two simple bolts, making it easy to assemble or repair.
  • Best Use: General commercial shipping and barges where ease of stowage and affordability are the priorities.
  • Limitation: It has a lower holding power ratio (approx. 2.5–4x its weight) compared to newer HHP designs.

 

2. The Baldt Anchor (The Heavy-Duty Classic)

Often associated with US Navy and heavy industrial applications, the Baldt is a variation of the stockless design known for immense structural strength.

  • Design: Robust, rectangular fluke shape that digs effectively into sand and mud.
  • Best Use: Offshore rigs, large cargo ships, and fleets requiring extreme durability in rough service conditions.

 

3. The Spek Anchor (Self-Righting Stability)

The Spek anchor is a modified version of the Hall anchor designed to improve stability in certain conditions.

Design: The center of gravity is located lower in the head, ensuring the anchor turns upright immediately upon touching the seabed.

Best Use: Rocky seabeds or difficult conditions where immediate fluke engagement is critical. It also stows very neatly in the anchor pocket without banging against the hull.

 

4. The AC-14 Anchor (High Holding Power)

The AC-14 is a “High Holding Power” (HHP) anchor.

  • Design: It features a very wide crown and thick, long flukes.
  • Best Use: Large container ships and supertankers. Because it has higher holding power, you can often use an AC-14 that is 25% lighter than a standard Hall anchor to achieve the same holding force, saving significant weight on the bow.
