Many rigging accidents happen because an operator tries to use a single clamp for multiple different tasks. A vertical clamp cannot safely lift a horizontal plate. A beam clamp is not designed for dragging materials.

The Three Main Categories of Rigging Clamps Explained
It is critical to distinguish between these three common types of rigging clamps, and understand how each of them relies on a different mechanical principle to hold the load.
Vertical Plate Clamps
These are designed to lift a single steel plate from a horizontal to a vertical position. They also transport plates that are already vertical. They use a pivoting cam with hardened teeth. The weight of the load forces the cam to bite into the steel. Heavy loads actually increase the grip. You must ensure the plate surface is not too hard for the teeth to penetrate.
Horizontal Plate Clamps
These are used to lift plates that must remain flat. They are almost always sold and used in pairs or sets of four. You attach them to a spreader beam or a multi-leg sling. They generally use a toe and a jaw to support the plate. Do not use these for turning or flipping a plate. That action can cause the clamp to disengage.
Beam Clamps
These serve a different function entirely. They attach to the flanges of an I-beam or H-beam. Their primary use is to create a fixed anchor point overhead. You can then hang a hoist or a lifting block from this point. Some models are rated to lift the beam itself. Always check the manufacturer rating to see if side-loading is permitted.
