The Industry Standard Formula for Reel Capacity
If you need to calculate capacity in the field, you must use the standard volume formula used by engineers and riggers across the globe. This formula treats the wound rope as a “doughnut” of volume on the drum.
To perform this calculation, you need four key dimensions (measured in inches):
- Flange Diameter (H): The full height of the reel side.
- Drum Diameter (D): The diameter of the barrel where the rope wraps.
- Width (B): The inside width between the two flanges.
- Rope Diameter: Used to determine the “K-Factor.”
The Reel Capacity Formula
- L = Length of wire rope (in feet).
- A = Depth of the rope space. This is found by subtracting the drum diameter (D) from the flange diameter (H), dividing by 2, and then subtracting your required Clearance (X). Here is the formula to calculate the value of A:
- X (Clearance): You should never fill a reel to the rim. Standard practice is to leave at least 2 inches (or 2x the rope diameter) of clearance to prevent damage.
